Decatur Land Clearing & Forestry Mulching

Decatur is a river town. Most land questions here start with where your line sits against the Tennessee River, Wheeler Lake, Flint Creek or the wildlife refuge. We clear and mulch on the private side of those lines, with no burn piles.

The river, the refuge and deep red valley clay

The Tennessee River forms Decatur’s north edge, held up as Wheeler Lake, and that shapes what a land job looks like here. Flint Creek runs north through Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and past Point Mallard Park on its way to the river. The refuge sits between Decatur and Priceville along Highway 67, and the city reaches across Flint Creek into Indian Hills and Burningtree. North of the bridge, a piece of Decatur lies in Limestone County between US 31 and I-65. So one tract here can have TVA, a federal refuge, a flood map and two counties in the conversation before a machine ever starts.

Away from the water this is limestone valley country. A 1921 federal soil survey called Decatur clay loam one of the strongest and most prized soils in Morgan County, and it placed a sandier Decatur fine sandy loam west and northwest of town. Decatur soils are well drained, formed from limestone and old valley fill, with bedrock generally deeper than six feet. In plain talk, that means deep clay ground, not the shallow ledge you hit up on the Cullman plateau. It also means timing, because clay gets slick after rain. The same survey notes coves and sinks along the north face of Little Mountain, the high ground south of the valley.

A lot of the need here is a lake or creek lot that has gone to brush, where the owner wants a house spot or a look at the water without stripping the place bare. Forestry mulching fits that kind of job well, because what gets cut stays on site as mulch and nothing gets piled or burned. It is no free pass, though. Mulching does not change who owns the strip behind your lot.

What grows here

The old Morgan County survey lists white oak, red oak, black oak and hickory on the red clay, with some red cedar and walnut. Brush and young trees take over idle lots and creek edges.

What the ground does

Deep clay over limestone, so rock is usually not the first problem away from the sinks. Water is, especially on low ground along Flint Creek and the lake.

Common jobs here

Mulching overgrown lake and creek lots, opening up house sites on the higher ground, and hauling spoil out of places where it should not sit.

The work

The pictures on this page are Suttles & Sons’ own. Keep in mind that clay around Decatur behaves its own way after a rain, whatever a photo from dry ground shows.

TVA, the refuge and the city each draw their own line

TVA first. On its reservoirs, Section 26a covers obstructions in or along the water, and TVA’s reach typically runs to the 500 year flood line or its flowage rights, whichever is higher. TVA may hold land or land rights between a lot and the lake. It says written approval is always needed to trim or remove vegetation on its property, so call its Public Land Information Center before anybody touches that strip. Its page also says taking trees and brush out of a streambed generally needs no 26a permit, unless the material gets piled in or along the waterway and becomes an obstruction.

Inside the city, the Building Department enforces floodplain rules and Engineering signs off on curb cuts. The subdivision regulations tie one acre or more of disturbance in the limits to ADEM’s stormwater permit, with a copy going to City Engineering. They also call for paved driveways on new construction in all zoning districts. Their definition of pavement lists gravel and crushed stone as alternative hard surfaces, but it does not plainly settle the driveway question. We build chert and gravel only, so ask City Engineering before counting on stone for a new house in the limits.

Wheeler refuge rules bar cutting or disturbing plants and digging on refuge land. If your place borders it, know your line, and get it surveyed if you are not sure. When we quote we will point out what we know of, and send you to the right office for the rest. Entrances on US 31, US 72 Alternate or Highway 67 generally go through ALDOT.

What sets the price near the river

Every Decatur lot gets its own quote. Being close to the water changes more than the view, and these four things show it.

Who owns the edge

Where TVA or refuge land borders the lot, the work area gets tighter, and approval time may come before any machine time.

Soft bottom ground

Low ground near Flint Creek and the lake can stay soft, which slows the work and limits where a loaded truck can go.

Brush or big timber

A mulcher moves fast through brush. Old oak and red cedar take more machine time, and more care if they stand close to keepers.

What has to leave

Mulch stays where it lands. Spoil from a cut or a low spot has to be loaded and hauled, and that is figured by the load and the distance.

Decatur clearing and shoreline questions

What should I expect to pay to clear land in Decatur, AL?

It comes down to how thick the growth is, how soft the ground is, how close you are to the water, and whether anything has to be hauled off. We price each lot by itself. Send pictures and a pin to (256) 735-3214 for a quote you can plan around.

Where does all the cut brush go?

It gets ground into mulch and stays on your ground, and nothing gets burned. What should not stay, like spoil near a waterway, can go out in our dump trucks.

Can you open up a view of the lake and still keep my trees?

On ground you own, yes. Mark what stays and we thin around it. If those trees stand on TVA land, TVA has to approve it in writing first, and that part is on the owner to get.

Do I need a permit to clear land in Decatur?

Depends on the spot. Start with the city Building Department for flood questions and City Engineering for the rest, and call TVA if you are near the lake. An acre or more of disturbance brings in ADEM's stormwater permit. Outside the limits, check with the county you are in.

Can I clear the strip between my lot and Wheeler Lake?

Find out who owns it first. TVA may own that strip or hold rights on it, and it wants written approval before any vegetation is trimmed or removed on its property. Its Public Land Information Center can tell you about your location.

My land backs up to the refuge. Does that change anything?

It means knowing exactly where your line is. Cutting plants and digging are barred on refuge land, so we stay on your side. If there is any doubt, get a survey before we start.

Can I have a gravel driveway on a new house in Decatur?

Ask City Engineering first. The subdivision regulations call for paved driveways on new construction, though they list gravel and crushed stone as alternative hard surfaces without settling it for driveways. Out past the limits, or on existing property, a chert and gravel drive may be simpler.

Can you look at pictures and give me a price?

Usually. Get a shot from the road, a couple from the thick part and one toward the water if you have it, then send a pin. We will say if it needs a look in person.
