Albertville Land Clearing & Building Pads

Flat Sand Mountain ground around Albertville, cleared and built up for poultry houses, shops and new homes. In Marshall County’s biggest city, the question is usually how to turn a field into a level, tight pad.

Sandstone caprock, chicken country and a city still filling in

Albertville’s welcome sign calls it The Heart of Sand Mountain. The plateau runs about 15 miles wide here, with a flat top cut by few streams and sandstone caprock underneath. Hartsells and Linker are common soils on the mountain, and USDA puts both at 20 to 40 inches over sandstone. For pad work, that depth is the whole game. There is enough soil to work with, but rock can stop a deep cut, so a pad here may get built up with fill more than cut down.

After World War II, Albertville became a poultry processing center, and USDA’s 2022 census ranked Marshall County third in Alabama for poultry and egg sales. Meanwhile the town keeps filling in. In July 2026 the council approved a 241 home planned development near South Broad and Walnut streets, and the council president called housing one of the city’s biggest needs. So land around here gets bought for very different reasons: a grower out toward Horton or Douglas wanting a long level pad, a builder working lots near town, or a family putting a house and shop on county road acreage along AL 75 or AL 205.

What grows here

Red oak, post oak, sweetgum, blackgum, hickory and shortleaf pine, the woods USDA lists for Linker soil. Pasture is common, and pine moves in once it is left alone.

What the ground does

Well drained loam with sandstone inside 20 to 40 inches on the common plateau series. Most of the city drains north to Short Creek, and the south end drains over the divide to Slab Creek.

Common jobs here

Long pads for poultry houses, shop and home pads, lots cleared for new houses, and fill and chert hauled by the load.

The work

These are Suttles & Sons’ own trucks, machines and jobs, not stock. With Albertville adding houses, you ought to be able to see real equipment before you hire a pad built.

Inside the city, ask about the grading permit first

Albertville’s building permit page lists a specialty excavating and grading permit for projects that affect the existing ground level and slopes on a property. A pad job in the city limits sounds like it could fall under that, so ask at the permit desk on the south side of City Hall before dirt moves. The city’s Building Division says its inspector also checks surface water drainage and zoning setbacks.

The city adopted a new zoning ordinance on February 3, 2026, by Ordinance 2030-26, with a new comprehensive plan still underway. The AG-1 district has a 5 acre minimum lot. If a poultry house pad is the plan and the land is inside the limits, ask the Building Department which districts allow it before spending anything.

Out in the county, the Marshall County Engineer’s office handles subdivision plats and the flood ordinance. It also takes timber notices when logs are headed to a mill over county roads, so ask them if logs will be leaving your place. ADEM’s stormwater permit starts at one acre of disturbance or a common plan totaling that, and entrances on US 431, AL 75 or AL 205 go through ALDOT. Expect us to bring up what we know of when we quote, and treat the office that issues the permit as the last word.

What decides a pad price in Albertville

Every pad is priced to its own plan. These are what usually swing it around here.

How deep the sandstone sits

If rock stops the cut at two or three feet, the pad gets raised with fill instead, and that changes the whole plan.

How much fill it takes

Every extra foot of lift across a long pad adds truckloads. Pad length and height matter as much as the acres.

Level end to end

Long houses need a tight grade from one end to the other. Even gentle plateau slope adds up over that length.

Field or woods first

Open pasture goes right to dirt work. A wooded tract needs clearing before the pad can even start.

Albertville pad and clearing questions

What does a pad or clearing job cost around Albertville?

It comes down to pad size, how much fill comes in, how deep the sandstone is and what has to be cleared first. There is no per acre number that holds up, so every job gets its own quote. Text photos, a map pin and the pad size to (256) 735-3214.

Do you pile and burn the trees?

No. Trees and brush get mulched where they fall, and it stays on site. No burning. Dirt or anything else that has to go can leave in our own dump trucks.

Can you clear around the big oaks at the house site?

Yes. Mark them and tell us where the house is going. We will say so up front if a tree sits too close to the pad to save.

Do I need a grading permit in Albertville?

Possibly. The city lists a specialty excavating and grading permit for work that changes ground level and slopes, so ask at the permit desk. Outside the limits, check with the Marshall County Engineer. At an acre or more of disturbance, ADEM's permit can apply too. We mention what we know of at quote time.

Can you build a chicken house pad on Sand Mountain?

Yes, building pads are a core part of the work, including long poultry pads. Your integrator or engineer sets size and grade, and we clear, fill and compact to that plan. If the land is inside city limits, confirm the zoning first.

Will sandstone keep me from getting a level pad?

It usually changes how you get there. USDA puts common soils on this plateau at 20 to 40 inches over sandstone, so instead of cutting deep, a pad may get built up with fill. Rock is one of the first things to look at.

Can you just haul fill dirt and chert?

Yes. Hauling gravel, chert and fill dirt, or hauling material off, can be a job by itself. Tell us how much you need and where it is going.

What do you need from me to give a quote?

Photos of the ground, a map pin and whatever plan you have for the pad or house. A photo works for most things. If it needs walking, we will say so.
